Have you ever heard of the iconic drink known as the Sazerac? If not, you're in good company—until we visited The Sazerac House, we were in the dark too! The Sazerac is celebrated as the first named cocktail in the United States, with its roots deeply embedded in the vibrant culture of New Orleans. Crafted by the talented Antoine Peychaud, this delightful concoction is a harmonious blend of spirit, bitters, sugar, and absinthe, named after the Sazerac-de-Forge et Fils cognac, which was its original base spirit. Think of it as a true Old Fashioned, but with a distinct licorice twist that sets it apart.
Located on the bustling corner of Magazine Street and Canal Street, just at the edge of the historic French Quarter, The Sazerac House is a museum dedicated to the rich history of this beloved cocktail and other whiskeys. Visitors can enjoy a variety of tours, tastings, and events for a fee, but don't miss out on the complimentary house tour that we experienced, which included some delightful free samples! (Just a friendly reminder: samples are available only for those of drinking age.)
One of the highlights for us was the availability of recipe cards for making Sazeracs and other cocktails at home. As we’ve recently taken to experimenting with new drinks, these cards have been a fantastic resource, allowing us to recreate our favorite cocktails long after our vacation has ended.
The Sazerac House also features several interactive exhibits, including virtual bartenders who demonstrate how to mix classic drinks, as well as informative displays on the history of whiskey and rum. We were pleasantly surprised by how much we learned during our visit. It was such a hidden gem, and we wholeheartedly recommend stopping by if you find yourself in the area. And of course, don’t forget to snap a picture by the famous wall of spirits!
