Sailing on the Norwegian Aqua

Sailing on the Norwegian Aqua

As the end of September rolled in, we embarked on Norwegian's newest ship, the Aqua, for what was meant to be a fall cruise to Bermuda. However, fall cruises are often at the mercy of Mother Nature, especially during hurricane season. Our tropical dreams were rerouted, transforming our journey into a New England cruise with delightful stops in Portland, ME; Boston, MA; and St. Johns, New Brunswick. While missing out on Bermuda might have been disappointing, it's essential to remember that itineraries can change due to storms. If you're set on specific destinations, consider traveling outside hurricane season. Keep in mind, though, that prices might be steeper.

Exploring the Norwegian Aqua

Despite a fondness for smaller ships, the Aqua has quickly become my favorite among the larger vessels in the NCL fleet. While it's easy to fall into the trap of comparisons when trying something new, I embraced the Aqua's unique offerings.

Design and Amenities

The design and feel of the Aqua are stunning. Unlike the traditional grandiose elements such as giant chandeliers and elegant staircases, the Aqua boasts bright, modern, and sleek interiors. The staterooms are slightly more spacious than previous models, offering modern aesthetics and ample storage. While three people in a room might still be cozy, storage is plentiful. The sleek design extends to these rooms, complete with a clever blue night light for those midnight bathroom visits.

Outdoor Spaces

Though cooler weather limited our outdoor enjoyment, the Aqua's outdoor spaces are promising. Discover outdoor heaters at the rear seating area, a cozy find on our last night! With pools on the ship's sides, a large wading area, and abundant poolside seating, the Aqua offers a variety of lounging options. While the main pool feels small for the ship's size, there's no shortage of seating and umbrellas. I'm eager to return in warmer weather to fully experience these spaces.

Activities and Entertainment

The Aqua doesn't skimp on activities. From basketball and pickleball courts to miniature golf and a plethora of games like darts and foosball, there's something for everyone. Kids have their dedicated area, and the thrilling coaster slide—a water slide and roller coaster hybrid—is a must-try.

For those sailing soon, don't miss the games and Sudoku puzzles near the Starbucks on deck 7. While we found the digital format of "Deal or No Deal" less appealing, "The Price is Right" show was a highlight. Although we're not big on shows, they come highly recommended for those who are.

In summary, the Aqua shines with its expansive outdoor spaces, perfect for reading, people-watching, or simply enjoying the ocean's serenity. Some indoor areas felt cramped, but this might change if both indoor and outdoor spaces are utilized fully during sea days.

Stay tuned for our next post, where we'll delve into the Aqua's dining experiences!
